"Branding" Used primarily to identify ownership for slaves and livestock; Also used to deter theft, and used against slaves who tried to run. This practice can be traced back to as far back as the Egyptians in 3000 BC.

It is interesting to me that the origin of the modern day advertising term "branding" is this crazy ritual of searing flesh with a unique signature burn. And it is an interesting parallel when you think of the main component of it being involuntary for the bearer of the brand. Suddenly, I am thinking about:
